BCUA Combined Heating and Power Facility with Expansion

Little Ferry, NJ
Role
EPC Contractor/Operating & Maintaining
Completion
4.2 MW (gross) of electricity, and 15 MMBTU/hour Boiler Capacity – HW

DCO Bergen Energy, LLC, owned by DCO Energy, LLC was contracted to design, construct, operate and maintain the facility to provide electricity and thermal energy to the Bergen County Utility Authority. The Combined Heating and Power Facility (CHP) is located adjacent to existing waste water treatment structures on the BCUA property in Little Ferry, New Jersey.

The CHP utilizes the Biogas produced in the waste water treatment process, mixes it with Natural Gas, and uses it to fuel electrical generation equipment with heat recovery steam generators. The project consists of two (2) Dual Fuel Jenbacher J-420 Engine Generator Sets and the auxiliary heat production equipment in the form of Waste Heat Recovery Unit(s) (WHRU), carbon filters, radiators, gas blower skid, high voltage electrical distribution and switchgear equipment, controls and interconnection piping and wiring. Hot water is produced as a byproduct of generation and is utilized in the waste treatment process.

An expansion project on the existing Combined Heating and Power Facility was completed in May 2015.  The Expansion includes (1) Jenbacher J-420 Engine Generator with a Waste Heat Recovery Unit (WHRU).  The Expansion generates an additional 1.4 MW of electricity and 5 MMBTU/hr Boiler Capacity – HW.
