Kevin Brown

Vice President

With more than 25 years of experience in the energy industry, Kevin E. Brown has developed, managed and operated numerous steam, chilled water and cogeneration facilities. His experience includes business unit operation at the senior executive level, project development, sales, marketing, customer service, start up and regulatory affairs. Through his career Mr. Brown has managed assets valued are greater than $500 million; representing 275 MW of electric generation capacity, 7.2 million pounds per hour of steam capacity, and 91,335 tons of chilled water capacity.

Mr. Brown is presently the Vice President of Project Development for DCO Energy where he is responsible for business growth through the development and/or acquisition of cogeneration, district heating, district cooling, energy advisory and consulting services, mechanical contracting services and joint ventures.

In January 2010 he launched Smart Energy Business Solutions. Smart Energy is an independent energy consulting practice with expertise in analyzing business opportunities, deal structure, transaction support, asset management, strategic planning, energy advisory services, energy service agreements, rate case and litigation support; and, expert witness testimony. Smart Energy’s industry segments served include: private equity, utilities, regulatory and governmental agencies, higher education and healthcare facilities, environmental services, facilities management and commercial office buildings. Mr. Brown played an integral role in helping a large multi-national environmental services company secure a $300 million global facilities management contract with a prominent pharmaceutical company. Mr. Brown also assisted an international EPC firm in winning a contract to develop and construct a combined heat and power project for a large global pharmaceutical company.

Performing in various capacities from 1983 to 2009 he ultimately served as Senior Vice President for the Veolia Energy North America/Trigen Companies where he was responsible for the safe, profitable and efficient operation of seven district energy and cogeneration systems in the company’s Central Region. In this position, Brown was also responsible for business growth, both by extension of the customer base and by acquisition or development of new energy businesses.

From 2002 to 2007, Mr. Brown was the Vice President and General Manager of Trigen-Philadelphia Energy Corporation and the Grays Ferry Cogeneration Partnership, where he was instrumental in growing these businesses through the development of regulated and unregulated business opportunities. These businesses included cogeneration, district heating, district cooling, energy advisory and consulting services, mechanical contracting services and joint ventures. Additionally, during his tenure with the company in Philadelphia, Mr. Brown served as vice president of marketing and business development, director of sales and marketing and marketing manager. Prior to that, he worked for Trigen at its Trenton and corporate office locations in a business development capacity.

Mr. Brown has led the development of numerous high value projects throughout his career, including:
The $170 million 170 MW Grays Ferry Cogeneration Partnership,
A $24 million, 7,000 ton chilled water plant serving a large urban hospital campus,
The acquisition of new district energy business with $10 million in revenue,
The development and negotiation of a utility outsourcing contract with a Fortune 100 defense contractor representing annual revenues of $4.3 million,
The negotiation of a bypass contract with a local Gas Distribution Company resulting in annual operating savings of $7 million annually.
In addition he has initiated numerous energy efficiency projects resulting in savings of more than $20 million annually.

Mr. Brown is an alumnus of Lehigh University, where he received a Masters Degree in Public Administration. He also received a BA from East Stroudsburg University.
